Anyone from Liberator reading this?

Because I've written the best Liberal Democrat song ever, and if you're really really nice to me, I might just let you put it in the songbook in time for Glee Club at the next Federal Conference.

The Great Tax Debate
(Words: Jonny Wright, 2006
Tune: The Times, They Are A-Changin’; Bob Dylan)

Once we supported the 50p rate –
In the last two elections it served us real great,
But we must re-adjust or we'll be out-of-date
’Cause the Tories are back, and they're gaining.
So our policy flagship must meet with its fate
For the times, they are a-changing.

Instead, we propose to set income tax low,
This can't be the same Lib Dem party I know!
But we'll double green taxes to soften the blow –
The environment badly needs saving.
And CGT taper relief's gotta go
For the times, they are a-changing.

My mate Evan Harris, he wasn't impressed,
He thought that the old 50p rate was best
But Sir Menzies's tax plans stood up to the test,
They were radical, green and trail-blazing.
We sent Evan packing back to Oxford West
For the times, they are a-changing.

The plebs will pay less, the polluters pay more,
Redistributing wealth to the nation's most poor,
And Sir Menzies is heading the way of Al Gore
With all the green action he's taking.
It's strange to see Libs offer tax cuts galore
But the times, they are a-changing.

Come gather round Liberals, please heed the call.
Come and muck in together, and give it your all,
And wait for the Lab-Con supporters to bawl
For the two-party system is fading.
We can make their elected dictatorship fall
For the times, they are a-changing.

(I actually emailed this to you a good few months ago, but you never wrote back. Bastards. Now that I have a Lib Dem blog all of my ownsome, I've decided to publish it myself. So there.)

I can just see it getting Christmas no. 1. In all seriousness though, it's pretty good.

I dont know if youve seen but there's some rather disturbing news that we're losing ground to the conservatives in the polls.

ICM's November poll put us on 21%, Labour on 32% and the Tories on 37%.

Now we've only 18% with Labour unchanged and the Tories on 40%. However, it would appear that we are by far the most popular second choice for voters, which is interesting. So not all is dross, yet.

Time for Nick Clegg i say!
